Durham, NC -- Counter Culture Coffee announced that San
Ramon, Nicaragua-based Finca Esperanza Verde (Green Hope
Farm) – the roaster’s long-time partner in the joint San
Ramon Project in coffee quality development, ecological
education, and sustainable agriculture – has been honored
among the top-10 overall winners in the prestigious 2007
Nicaragua Cup of Excellence competition.
“We are so proud of our partners at Finca Esperanza Verde
and the success they have achieved,” said Counter Culture
Co-Owner and Director of Coffee Peter Giuliano. “They have
worked tremendously hard to improve the quality of their
coffee production, and as this award demonstrates, their
efforts have led to one of the best coffees produced in
Latin America this year. In addition, there is every
reason to believe that their coffee will get even better
in the years to come.”
Since its founding in 1998, Finca Esperanza Verde has
partnered with Counter Culture to improve its methods of
crop cultivation, organic processing, and farm management.
Since 2001, in addition to buying and roasting each of the
farm’s annual harvests, Counter Culture has coordinated
annual trips to the farm’s ecolodge in San Ramon, where
groups of Counter Culture customers and staff members can
gain first-hand knowledge of the farm’s quality-driven and
ecologically friendly coffee production.
“Our partnership with Counter Culture has inspired us to
make Finca Esperanza Verde not only a model for organic,
sustainable agriculture, but also a quality-focused
producer of one of the world’s finest coffees,” said Lonna
Harkrader, president of Sister Communities of San Ramón,
Nicaragua, a Durham-based nonprofit that owns and operates
Finca Esperanza Verde. “The Cup of Excellence award has
brought joy to everyone who works on the farm, and it’s an
encouraging affirmation that all of our hard work has
truly paid off.”
This year, the Nicaragua Cup of Excellence program
received coffee samples from more than 370 farms. The
winning lots, which were chosen by a select jury of
national and international coffee experts, will be sold to
the highest bidders during an internet auction in June.
